40, a mother of two – and European champion!
The first two sets of medals are already gone. Jo Pavey took the title in the women’s 10000m, and top favourite David Storl won the men’s shot put.

Jo Pavey is 40 years old, and she became a mother for the second time last year. But neither one thing nor the other stopped her from going for gold and win her first major title. In a tough race, she defeat her two French opponents Clémence Calvin and Laila Traby to get to the top of the podium.

David Storl easily managed to defend the title he had taken at Helsinki 2012. Germany’s two-time world champion won his competition comfortably with a 21.41 throw, defeating Borja Vivas from Spain and Tomasz Majewski from Poland.
